The Grocery Bill – Week One

on August 13, 2012

Welcome to August! Home of the Big-little-medium-little shop algorithm! The plan this month is to have four weeks of grocery shopping, in which the first week is a big grocery shop (approximately half of the monthly budget), the second week is a small shop to pick up milk and apples, the third week is a medium shop which refreshes items such as cheese and vegetables, and the fourth shop is another small shop that simply picks up milk and apples. The theory behind this is that we can purchase enough items for two weeks worth of food at one time, with the exception of milk since I cannot fit 8 bags of milk in my fridge in one go.

Week One Groceries

  • green onions
  • 3 bags of chips
  • 4 cans of mixed beans
  • 3 avocados
  • celery
  • bananas
  • 6 bags of pasta
  • 12 bagels
  • aluminum foil
  • 7 boxes of cereal
  • 1.32 kgs of tomatoes
  • sour cream
  • ranch sauce
  • 860 grams of green peppers
  • 1.75 kgs of apples
  • one bag of rice
  • mayonnaise
  • cream cheese
  • 2 bags of 1% milk
  • 2 bags of 2% milk
  • 3 bricks of cheese
  • one box of baby spinach
  • 10 tortillas

TOTAL: $118.74

This leaves $121.26 for the remainder of August 2012.

Chicken Salad Wraps

Sorry. No picture.

To make a homemade chicken salad you simply pick the leftover chicken off the carcass from the whole chicken you roasted last night. You are trying for one cup of chicken. If you get two cups, simply double the recipe.

One cup of chicken. Add 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, one stalk of chopped celery and 1/4 cups of chopped green onions. Mix. Voila!

To make tasty wraps simply lay a wrap flat, place fresh baby spinach along the center line, top with approximately 3/4 cup of chicken salad. Wrap and eat.

Trés simple!

I love that you have “ear-marked” funds for potato chips – my weakness. Grin.

Aw, thank you! I’m really flattered (and slightly confused) as to being a great source of encouragement, but I have been working on being more gracious about compliments so I will say: Thank you. 😀
